April 2, 2005 17:14 - Hollywood Lies

Well, I've finished - at last.

I've finished Hollywood Lies - my next game forFreeform Games. I've done the first draft, run it through playtesting and then edited out the bits that didn't quite work. Now all that's needed is a final proof-read and then we'll add it to the Freeform Games site.

The game itself is set at a post award party - a bit like a post-Oscar party - for the movie Dazzled to Death. (Yes, that's actually the name of another Freeform Games murder mystery - for all the movies in the game I used existing Freeform Games murder mysteries.) So it's all glamourous frocks and black tie - great for dressing up.

As for a plot, the star of Dazzled to Death has died . . . but is it murder? (Of course it is!) As well as solving the murder, there are also movies to make - the producers all want to make a movie and have to sign up directors, screenwriters and actors for their movies. Then, at the end of the evening, a scene from each movie is acted out and everyone votes for their favourite movie and actor or actress.

Writing Hollywood Lies was a lot of work - but great fun. And soon we'll be selling it at Freeform Games - I'll post a note here when it is available. (Hopefully in a week or two.)

April 12, 2005 20:04 - New Kids Mystery - The Perplexing Case of The Pilfered Pooch

Mysteries on the Net have just published a a NEW Kids Mystery - The Perplexing Case of The Pilfered Pooch. Give your pre-teen sleuths a real challenge....

Here's what happened . . .

Every year the small town of Tadpole Grove grinds to a halt for the Tadpole Grove Dog Show. Hopeful hounds from miles around gather in the town hall to be judged on their appearance, behavior, training and friendliness. It's the biggest event in town and everybody looks forward to it.

For the last four years, the show's Grand Champion has been Cocoa, a beautiful chocolate Labrador retriever. Unfortunately this means that the number of visitors is dwindling, and the other contestants are starting to grumble. Rumors are spreading that the whole show is a fix.

This year, preparations were underway for the big show. The hall was decorated and ready, but very few tickets had been sold. Then, the night before the big event, phones started to ring, and news quickly spread that Cocoa had been kidnapped! A strange note was found early the next morning that said only: 'Not this time.'

April 19, 2005 20:04 - Hollywood Lies published!

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, I've been busy working on Hollywood Lies - a Tinseltown-themed murder mystery game for 16 to 22 guests, plus a host.

The game is now finished - proofreading and testing is done and it's now available from Freeform Games.

I must admit that I'm pretty pleased with it.

Hollywood Lies is set at the post-award party following the prestigious Eric awards (at which Dazzled to Death has swept the board). However the star of Dazzled to Death has died in a car crash. Is it murder? You bet it is...

As well as solving the murder, there's the usual mass of other plots that you can expect from a Freeform Games mystery. There are negatives to be bought and sold, a hypnotist - and even movies to be made. Producers are looking for directors, stars and screenwriters for their next movies, and Hollywood Lies ends with a scene from the future movies acted out for everyone to enjoy.

Read more about Hollywood Lies here.

April 22, 2005 20:41 - Women playing men and men playing women

Have you ever hosted a murder mystery party where you haven't quite got the right mix of men and women?

Me too. At Freeform Games we try and ensure that we have as many gender-neutral characters as possible (although there are always a few male and female characters). That way we can make our games appeal to as many people as possible.

Still, we do still get the odd occasion when we have too many or too few of one sex or another.

So what do you do?

Well, I've just added a new tip to Great Murder Mystery Games - Click here to read "Playing the opposite sex".
