May 3, 2006 18:43 - Party organisers

If you don't fancy the idea of hosting your own murder mystery party (and everything that entails), you can always pay someone else to do it for you.

I'm now listing professional party organisers on my site - they will organise the party and arrange everything for you. Of course, you will have to pay for the service - but at least you can relax in the knowledge that seasoned professionals are managing your party for you.

(These organisers are great for corporate parties and team-building events!)

At the moment I've only got two organisers listed - one in the UK and one in the USA. If you know of any others, do ask them to get in touch!

May 8, 2006 20:20 - Decision making made easy with Choose It!

Hi,

I've just come across a nifty piece of (free!) software that helps you make decisions. It's called "Choose It!" and you can get to it here.

You can use choose it for anything. For example you might be deciding what to do for your birthday.

So, you start by framing the question: "What shall I do for my birthday?"

Then, you list the options (as many as you like, but four or five is probably the optimal number). So your options might be: a murder mystery party, a trip to the theatre, a meal at a restaurant, a trip to the zoo.

You then decide the four or five success factors that are most important to you. In this example, they might be: Cost, memorable-ness, suitabilty for 10-15 people, ease of organisation. You also score (out of 100) each of these factors to show which ones are most important to you. For example, cost might be very important to you, so you score that 80-100.

(Tip - I always struggle with scoreing out of 100, but I can score on a range of 1-5 quite well. So I usually work out my score in terms of 1-5 and multiply by 20.)

Then you score each of your options against each of your five success factors.

Choose It! then does some sums, and ranks your options in order - with the best option scoring the highest.

May 13, 2006 11:28 - Some of your recent murder mystery questions

Here are a few of your recent questions:

Is it possible to host a murder mystery game and play a character as well?

Yes - sort of. Dinner and a Murder Mystery Games and Murder Mystery Games Ltd both write their games so that the host has a role - usually smaller than the other characters.

Freeform Games, on the other hand, write their games so that the host is separate. That's because a Freeform Games murder mystery is usually a little more involved, and they benefit from having a separate host. However, it is possible to host a Freeform Games murder mystery and still play a character - and I've written about that here.

Do any of the murder mystery games have multiple endings so you can run them more than once?

None of the parties on Great Murder Mystery Games have multiple endings - in fact I can't think of any game that does. As the games are interactive they never play the same way twice, but they can't really be played by the same group of people over and over again.

I have never hosted nor attended a murder mystery game before, and I am considering hosting one in my home. There are so many out there - how do I know to chose one that's good?

All of the games have been played by people with little or no experience of hosting a murder mystery game. They all contain clear instructions - but having said that, I've found that The Final Curtain works well with beginners. Click here to learn more about The Final Curtain.

Do you customize games?

I don't customize games, for two reasons. The first is technical - the games aren't mine to customize as they're sold by the publishers. The second reason is financial - you could contact the publishers direct but they generally aren't interested in customizing games as the cost of customising generally outweighs the rewards. (On the other hand, if money really is no object...)
