Guilty Parties returns! A new game and a sneak peek for Halloween
September 14, 2025

Welcome to Guilty Parties

Welcome back!

It’s been a long time, but welcome back to Guilty Parties, the murder mystery party newsletter from Great Murder Mystery Games.

I’ve decided to resurrect this old newsletter to highlight new murder mystery games you might have missed, and to talk about other things that, as they interest me, may interest you.

This time I’m going to talk about Death at the Derby and an upcoming game that will be out for Halloween.

Two hosts for Death at the Derby

Death at the Derby is an interactive murder mystery game set at a modern American racecourse (think Kentucky Derby or even Royal Ascot) for 30-32 guests (plus two hosts) published by Freeform Games.

Click here to read more about the game, including the full cast list.

As you may know, I’m one half of Freeform Games, the publishers of Death at the Derby. Death at the Derby is “my” game – I worked with the authors Pam Hoffman and Jeremy Gustafson and helped develop the game and put it into our format.

Because Death at the Derby is fairly complicated (we suggest that it’s for “expert” hosts), we recommend running it with two hosts.

But what do I mean by complicated? Well, Death at the Derby includes:

  • Rules for the horse race itself, which involves vet checks, warm-ups and similar activities, all of which affect a horse’s chance of winning.
  • Rules for interfering with the race results (I’m trying not to give too much away here)
  • A hat competition
  • Several locations that players can visit. (These are managed virtually – so if a player wishes to visit a particular location, they do that by talking to the host who tells them what they see when they visit that location.)
  • Betting on the horse race
  • Pickpocketing rules
If that sounds like fun, then you should check out Death at the Derby!

(If, on the other hand, that sounds too complicated, then Freeform Games have many simpler games, such as Reunion with Death, Hollywood Lies or A Will to Murder.)

Coming soon for Halloween

Halloween is not far away, and Freeform Games are busy preparing The Kiss of Death, a vampiric Gothic Victorian murder mystery for 6-9 players that should be ready by early September.

I’ll have more details next month, but I can say that I played in a playtest of it back in July and had a lot of fun with it.

That’s it for this time!
