the story

A Will to Murder is set in the 1930s in Albion House, a stately dwelling in the small English village of Highthorpe.

Albion House belonged to Roy O'Leary – who was murdered yesterday afternoon...

Roy O'Leary was elderly and wealthy, and there are several family members who may benefit from his last will and testament.

O'Leary's lawyer has asked the family to gather together at Albion House, the day after the murder, to hear the reading of the will.

The police are also present – because the O'Leary family are the prime suspects in the murder case...

It sounds like it should be a case for Miss Marple.

But as she's not present, who will solve the murder?

how A will to murder works

A Will to Murder is an interactive murder mystery game, which means that each player receives a detailed character booklet that includes a backstory, objectives for them to solve and information on other characters.

They may also have item cards (representing important clues) and abilities (that allow them to uncover secrets and information about other characters.)

In my opinion, once you've played an interactive murder mystery game, you won't want to play any other sort.

the cast

The cast of A Will to Murder includes:

  • Janis O'Leary – Roy O'Leary's widow
  • Alan and Gillian Trode – Gillian is Roy's oldest child and a professional sculptor.
  • Corey O'Leary – Roy's youngest child, an amateur naturalist
  • Cornelius and Regina Khan – Regina is Roy's middle child, a writer of detective novels
  • Atkins – the O'Leary family's old retainer
  • Doctor Barker – local physician and family friend
  • Inspector Harris – the detective investigating the murder

the details

A Will to Murder needs a dedicated host, someone to organise the game.

They will read the entire game and will be available to answer questions.

I really enjoy being the host - you know what's going on and can watch your friends scheme and plot and be devious to one another.

What age is A Will to Murder suitable for?

Freeform Games recommends A Will to Murder is suitable for those aged 18+ as it contains extra-marital affairs.

How long does A Will to Murder take to play?

I would allow 3-4 hours to play A Will to Murder. While the game itself takes 2.5-3 hours to play, I recommend allowing time to introduce the game and wind down after.

Where's my download?

Shortly after buying A Will to Murder you should receive an email from Freeform Games explaining how to download the game files.

If you haven't received this, please first check your spam filter - sometimes the emails end up there.

If that fails, please get in touch directly with Freeform Games - with the details of which game you bought, when you bought it, and which email address you used. Or contact me (with that same information) and I'll get in touch for you.

How many guests will I need?

You need at least 6 guests and no more than 9.

If you have fewer than 6 guests you will have to drop a character (which may affect the plot), or play a character yourself (not ideal, but I talk about it here), or even ask a guest to play two characters at once.

If you have more than 9 guests you will need to create your own, or use one of the free extra characters provided by Freeform Games when you download A Will to Murder.

Can I host A Will to Murder and also play a character?

The host has an important role in A Will to Murder. The organize and coordinate the party. They also act as an impartial "referee" - so it's important that they have read the game and understand what is going on.

So I recommend not playing a character and hosting the game.

But if you still want to host a game and play a character (or you have to because a player cannot attend), I have advice on doing that here.
