Larger parties add-ons

For larger parties (23-30), Would it work if each couple that was invited was given a main character and the spouse given a character from the extra packet to act as a personal assistant?

I'm thinking of giving my husband a 40th birthday party in December. His birthday is Christmas day and since he will be 40, a bigger celebration is in order. What do you suggest? I'd hate to have any guests assume they were less important by giving both people characters that won't be involved in the main plot. Can they buddy up as sort of team, working off the clues given to the main character?

I read the information about the add-on characters and hosted a boxed murder game many years ago. The boxed game had 8 characters and I had to invite 10. I made up my own extras at that time. It worked out ok but I had a hard time deciding who would look on with someone and who would be a real character.

My response:

As you've found, the boxed games aren't quite so easy to add characters for...

While what you suggest would work, the extra characters are full characters in themselves - and they are unlikely to be helpers or assistants.

However, if I were you rather than do that (as in my opinion the extra character packs aren't that great), why not simply purchase a party for the right number? There are lots of games that will cater for up to 30 players, and that way everyone gets a character that is suited to the game.
